Lebanon Launches Its National Green Education Strategy
Lebanon has officially launched the National Green Education Strategy during a ceremony held at the Grand Serail in Beirut. The strategy aims to transform the country’s education system to address environmental and climate challenges by equipping students with the knowledge, skills, and values needed to adapt to rapidly changing climate conditions and contribute to sustainable development. It will advance along four main pillars: greening learning environments, integrating climate education into curricula, strengthening institutional capacity, and enhancing community engagement.
Minister of Education Dr. Rima Karami stated that the reform is not about adding an extra layer to the curriculum but about creating a holistic system aligned with environmental, energy, and agricultural policies. She emphasized that the new curriculum will link green competencies with critical thinking and life skills.
During the launch ceremony, a panel featuring the Ministers of Education, Environment, and Tourism highlighted the importance of inter-ministerial cooperation. Environment Minister Dr. Tamara El Zein noted that the ministry will support schools in adopting sustainable practices, while Tourism Minister Laura Khazen Lahoud underscored the essential role of education in protecting cultural heritage and the environment. UNESCO reaffirmed its commitment to supporting MEHE and CERD in implementing the strategy, emphasizing the central role of education in preparing Lebanon for a more resilient and sustainable future.
