Vaping Among Adolescents in Long Island Reaches Concerning Levels

Electronic cigarette use among adolescents in Long Island has shown a significant increase in recent years, and experts state that this trend is partly linked to the legalization of marijuana. Educators and addiction specialists are issuing warnings due to the risks this situation poses to young people’s physical and mental development.

According to mental health experts, the rise in vaping is tied to increasing mental health challenges among youth. Young people struggling with anxiety, depression, or other emotional difficulties are said to be more likely to turn to nicotine or cannabis products as a coping mechanism.

Schools in the region are attempting to intervene in various ways. Some schools have installed vape-detection systems, while others have intensified educational campaigns explaining the risks of substance use. However, experts point out that serious misconceptions still persist among youth. “Young people think, ‘because it’s legal, it’s not dangerous,’” said Carolyn Wash, clinical director of substance abuse at the South Shore Guidance Center, emphasizing that vaping remains a risky behavior even when the substance involved is legal.
