Smart Technology Can Reduce Teacher Burnout

High rates of burnout among K-12 teachers in the United States have once again brought the issue of teacher retention in schools to the agenda. According to RAND’s 2025 State of the American Teacher survey, 53 percent of K-12 teachers reported experiencing burnout, compared with 39 percent of workers in other professions. Experts say that although salaries and school culture are important in reducing teacher burnout, the right technology investments can also help teachers remain in the profession by easing their administrative workload.

Educational technology experts note that school districts’ technology decisions directly affect teachers’ invisible workload. Smart investments in areas such as device management, AI-assisted planning tools, workflow automation, and classroom management systems can help teachers use their time more efficiently. However, experts emphasize that technology should not replace teachers’ professional judgment; rather, it should support the work they already do.

With the support of technology, automating routine tasks such as grading, taking attendance, lesson planning, and parent communication allows teachers to spend more time engaging with students. On the other hand, tools that do not work well with existing systems may increase teachers’ workload. AI-assisted tools also stand out in reducing teachers’ workload. Teachers can use these tools to prepare draft lesson plans, adapt materials for different groups of students, speed up parent communication, and monitor student engagement. However, experts stress that AI tools must be monitored in terms of data privacy and instructional quality.
