China’s top education authority has issued new guidelines to enhance science education in primary and secondary schools. Under these guidelines, each primary school is required to have at least one science teacher with a master’s degree in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM). Schools must also appoint a science-focused vice-principal to lead science projects and collaborations.
The initiative builds on the establishment of 125 national science education experimental zones and 994 experimental schools. Education Minister Huai Jinpeng emphasized the importance of creating comprehensive systems, training highly qualified teachers, and leveraging digital tools to enhance science education. Partnerships with universities, research institutions, and science museums are also encouraged to establish science education bases.
Additionally, interdisciplinary projects integrating science education with moral, aesthetic, and physical education are recommended. Schools are urged to organize regular extracurricular activities like nature observations and engineering projects. The new policy promotes a science curriculum that combines national and local content, aiming to foster critical thinking, exploration, and innovation among students.
