UN Report: 234 Million Children Deprived of Education

The United Nations’ Education Cannot Wait (ECW) fund released a new report highlighting the increasing number of children in crises who lack access to quality education. The report reveals that the number of crisis-affected school-aged children has risen by 35 million in the past three years, reaching 234 million by the end of 2024.

Ongoing conflicts, climate-induced disasters, and economic challenges are jeopardizing the future of millions of children worldwide. Refugees, displaced children, girls, and children with disabilities are among the most vulnerable groups. Meanwhile, humanitarian funding for education has stagnated, and the share of development aid allocated to education has decreased.

ECW Director Yasmine Sherif stated, “Millions of children in crises are being denied their right to education. Increased funding is essential to unlock their potential and help them become agents of change.” The report also underscores how climate change, through events like floods and droughts, exacerbates educational challenges. ECW and its partners aim to secure $600 million in additional funding to reach 20 million children by 2026, providing them with opportunities for quality education despite these interconnected crises.
