Helping New Teachers Develop a Sense of Agency

The article discusses the challenge of retaining new teachers, especially those of color, in minority-serving and rural schools post-COVID-19. The authors suggest psychological ownership as a solution to this problem. Psychological ownership refers to the feeling of an employee's identity, control, and belonging towards their workplace, which is distinct from the concept of buy-in as it comes from an internal desire to impact the institution.

School leaders are encouraged to focus on three key areas to foster this sense of ownership. First is agency, where new teachers are supported through challenges by working closely with school leaders and mentors and receiving relevant professional development without being overwhelmed with complex tasks. The second is identity, which involves helping teachers develop their professional self-identity through autonomy, personal goal-setting, and recognition of their contributions. Lastly, belonging emphasizes the importance of group membership and engagement in school culture. The authors highlight the critical role of time in developing these aspects to allow teachers to feel competent and integral to the school community. The overarching goal is to empower teachers to think they truly own their jobs and are vital to their school's success.
