How to Use Universal Design for Learning to Create Assessments

Kathy Collier's article on using Universal Design for Learning (UDL) for assessments in elementary education emphasizes the importance of providing students with various ways to express and demonstrate their learning. UDL focuses on "multiple means of action and expression," which allows students to showcase their understanding in diverse manners. The approach involves maintaining rigorous, grade-level instruction that is accessible to all. It requires regular, actionable feedback from teachers, peers, and students, focusing on strategies and behaviors such as perseverance and mindset. When designing assessments, teachers should start by unpacking learning objectives and setting clear success criteria, often developed through rubrics or checklists. Assessment choices should align with these criteria, providing students with different ways to demonstrate understanding, such as verbal explanations, using manipulatives, or highlighting key concepts. UDL is integrated throughout the learning process, not just at the end, including regular check-ins, using varied

formats for student responses, and encouraging self-assessment. The overarching aim is to nurture expert learners who are motivated and feel empowered in their educational journey, thereby bridging opportunity gaps and catering to all learners, especially those who have been historically marginalized.
