Bullied Youths at Higher Risk

A dissertation by psychiatry researcher Yuko Mori from the University of Turku reveals that youths who have been bullied face a higher risk of attempting suicide than their non-bullied peers. Mori's study is the first large-scale international research that examines the links between cyberbullying and suicide attempts across more than a dozen Asian and European countries.

The research surveyed over 21,000 youths aged 13-15 about how safe they feel at school. The results indicated that more than 31% of students reported feeling unsafe at school. While only 11.5% of female students in Finland felt unsafe at school, this figure was as high as 69.8% in Japan.

Mori emphasized the importance of making schools safer and providing better mental health support for youths in her study. “To help young people thrive during this critical stage of their development, we must implement mental health programs in schools and anti-bullying initiatives,” she stated.
