South Korea Faces Rising School Violence

In South Korea, the number of reported school violence cases rose to 61,445 last year, marking an increase of 3,464 cases from the previous year. This rise occurred despite new measures introduced by the Ministry of Education to address school violence, including a policy to consider students’ school violence records in university applications starting in 2026.

The increase in violence was notable across all school levels. High schools saw a significant rise of 12.8%, with 12,273 cases reported. Elementary schools reported 19,805 cases, and middle schools reported 29,007 cases, with both levels experiencing smaller increases.

Regionally, Gyeonggi Province reported the highest number of cases, with 16,155 incidents, followed by Seoul and South Gyeongsang Province. The number of repeated violence incidents also rose to 2,338. Physical violence emerged as the most common type of school violence, followed by verbal abuse, sexual violence, cyberbullying, threats, extortion, and bullying.
