Italy Considers Ban on Burqas and Niqabs in Schools
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced that the government is preparing a new measure that would place a limit on the number of foreign students in schools and ban the wearing of burqas and niqabs. Meloni said the measure would also introduce new requirements aimed at supporting the integration of foreign students into the Italian education system.
One of the main elements of the proposed measure would be a cap on the number of foreign students in classrooms. Meloni stated that people who come to Italy and want to build their future there should learn the Italian language, understand Italian culture, and respect the country’s rules. The prime minister argued that this approach is one of the key ways to support the integration of migrants into the education system and wider society. Meloni also announced that the wearing of burqas and niqabs would be banned in schools. However, she did not mention any ban on the hijab, or headscarf.
