UNESCO Launches New Initiative to Tackle Gender-Based Violence in Nepal

UNESCO has launched a comprehensive initiative in Nepal aimed at eliminating gender-based violence in schools through close collaboration with local partners. Conducted in partnership with the Centre for Education and Human Resource Development and Asaman Nepal, the mission took place between 11 and 15 August 2025. It seeks to strengthen efforts to combat gender-based violence, enhance local ownership, and align these actions with Nepal’s School Education Sector Plan (2022–2032) and National Gender Equality Strategy.

During the workshops, students reported that fear of harassment prevents some of their peers from attending school regularly. This highlighted that gender-based violence is not merely a disciplinary issue but a fundamental matter of human rights and safety. Participants underlined the damaging effects of ridicule, bullying and gender discrimination on students’ confidence and academic performance.

Local authorities expressed strong support for the initiative and pledged to integrate these efforts into education planning, teacher training, and classroom activities. Officials emphasised that this initiative represents a significant step towards creating safer, more inclusive and equitable learning environments across Nepal.
