The Cabinet of Fiji has approved the Student Progression and Repetition Policy, designed to ensure more effective monitoring and management of student achievement in primary and secondary schools.
Under the new regulation, decisions on whether a student will advance to the next grade or repeat a year will now be made collectively by teachers, parents, students, and school administrators.
According to the policy, student progress will be assessed based on literacy and numeracy skills. For students who fail to meet the required learning objectives, targeted interventions and additional support programmes will be implemented.
The Ministry of Education also announced that it will introduce special support programmes for vulnerable groups, including students with disabilities, children from low-income families, and those at risk of dropping out of school. These initiatives will be carried out by the Curriculum Advisory Services and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) units to ensure equal opportunities for every student to succeed.
Officials emphasised that the aim of the policy is not only to measure academic progress but also to promote a holistic approach to education that supports students’ social, emotional, and cognitive development. The new policy is expected to enhance the overall quality of education across the country and lead to sustained improvements in student performance.
