Thousands of International Students Caught in US Visa Chaos
Although the US administration has initiated the process of reactivating the records of international students, it is reported that many will not be spared from ongoing hardship. As a consequence of the Trump administration’s strict visa policies targeting international students, the legal status of over 4,700 students was revoked during the spring term. A large number of these students were reportedly removed from the system without explanation or prior notification.
Students removed from the SEVIS (Student and Exchange Visitor Information System) database have experienced severe disruption not only to their education but also to their employment, financial stability, and social lives.
While the legal status of some students has since been reinstated, the psychological trauma they experienced continues to have lasting effects. One student, describing the ordeal as overwhelming, stated they would not risk a second visa cancellation and expressed an intention to leave the US, asking, “How much more pain must I endure for this education?”
Legal experts have criticised the government's reactivation letters sent to students, describing them as insufficient. They also noted the continued lack of legal safeguards necessary to protect the rights of affected students.
