58% of School Principals in the U.S. Use AI in Work Processes

A study conducted in the United States found that 58% of school principals used artificial intelligence tools in their work processes during the 2023-2024 academic year. A Rand Corporation report indicates that school leaders primarily use AI for internal communication, administrative support, teacher recruitment, evaluations, professional development, instructional enhancement, and lesson integration.

Despite the growing use of AI, only 18% of principals reported receiving any guidance from their school or district on AI usage. Low-income schools were less likely to have such guidance, with only 25% offering AI-related support, compared to 13% in high-income schools. The report suggests that school leaders in underprivileged areas may have limited access to technology or face more urgent challenges, hindering AI adoption.

While AI usage among teachers remains limited, English and science teachers, along with high school educators, were found to use AI more frequently in lesson planning. In the 2023-2024 academic year, 25% of teachers reported using AI for lesson preparation or instruction.

To bridge the gap in AI adoption, the report recommends making advanced AI tools freely available, particularly for teachers and students in disadvantaged areas. Expanding access to these technologies is considered a key step toward reducing disparities in AI integration within education.
