Mobile Phone Ban in Schools in Scotland Brings Success
After the Scottish Government granted school principals the authority to ban mobile phones, many schools across the country began implementing this ban, leading to significant transformations within these institutions. Gordonstoun, the former school of King Charles, is among the schools that have enforced the mobile phone ban and has reported positive outcomes from the practice. The school’s headmaster, Simon Cane-Hardy, stated that since the mobile phone ban was introduced in 2017, classes have become more lively as students now engage with each other and participate in lessons instead of looking at their phones.
Cane-Hardy highlighted that this change has provided substantial educational benefits and has led to noticeable improvements in student behavior. Emphasizing that limiting the use of mobile phones has positively impacted academic performance, Cane-Hardy noted that the school's academic results have significantly improved since 2017. He also expressed hope that the positive results of the mobile phone ban will serve as an example for other schools, encouraging them to adopt similar policies. Education Minister Jenny Gilruth, who pointed out that mobile phone use negatively affects student behavior, stated that she supports more schools taking steps in this direction.
