Parents in Germany Demand Free Tutoring for All

A recent survey in Germany reveals that half of parents view private tutoring as a crucial support mechanism within the education system, with nearly nine out of ten calling for free tutoring services for all students. The survey highlights the significant role state-supported tutoring programs play, particularly for students from low-income families.

According to the national survey, 22% of parents in Germany pay for private tutoring for their children. This percentage rises to 37% for students in the 11th grade and above. Notably, low-income families have benefited from the state-funded Education and Participation Package (BuT), which has provided access to these services since 2011.

The survey also found that 69% of parents believe private tutoring gives an advantage to children from wealthy families. Additionally, 53% of respondents see tutoring as an integral part of Germany's education system. Moreover, 88% of parents advocate for making tutoring services available for free to all students, regardless of their parents' financial status.

A study conducted in Hamburg demonstrated the substantial benefits of state-supported tutoring programs for students. Last year, 55.6% of students who received tutoring were able to meet performance standards by the end of the academic year. This success has fueled calls for the expansion of similar free tutoring programs across Germany.
