Penn State University Has Become the First Ivy League School to Establish an Undergraduate Major in Artificial Intelligence

Artificial intelligence is widely regarded as one of the most disruptive technologies in human history, and the importance of education and research in the field is growing by the day.  As a result of this development, there is growing interest in artificial intelligence, which is leading to new and exciting developments in the academic world.

Starting this autumn, the University of Pennsylvania will expand its opportunities for students. The university has announced a bachelor’s degree programme focused on artificial intelligence, a first among Ivy League universities. The announcement was made in a news release published this week. The Bachelor of Science in Artificial Intelligence Engineering programme teaches students the basic principles of artificial intelligence and how to use its capabilities in a responsible and ethical manner.

Its aim is to provide students with an in-depth understanding of how AI is transforming many areas of life, including health, energy, transportation, commerce, and national security. This highlights the rapidly growing use and impact of productive AI. According to President J. Larry Jameson, this new degree programme is a crucial step in educating engineers who will lead the development and use of powerful technologies in the service of humanity.

The curriculum includes entry-level courses such as ‘Introduction to Artificial Intelligence’ and ‘Data, Systems, Decisions’, as well as required courses like ‘Control for Autonomous Robots’, ‘Natural Language Processing’ and ‘Signal and Information Processing’. In addition, students are offered elective courses such as ‘Reliable Artificial Intelligence’, ‘Machine Perception’, and ‘Brain Computer Interfaces’. These courses enhance the ability to apply AI technology in various disciplines.

Vijay Kumar, the Dean of Engineering at Penn, emphasized that the programme will prepare students to use AI not only as a tool but also as a fundamental force for good. This approach aims to equip the next generation of engineers with both technical skills and the ability to apply them for the benefit of society.
