School Closures Ineffective in Halting COVID-19 Spread in Communities

The COVID-19 pandemic has presented significant challenges to educational systems worldwide. Among the measures taken to prevent the spread within communities, the closure of schools was a prominent strategy. However, research conducted by investigators from McMaster University has revealed that this measure did not achieve the anticipated effect. The study shows that schools did not contribute significantly to the spread of COVID-19 when effective masking and vaccination were used.

Professor Sarah Neil-Sztramko, a health research scholar at McMaster, and her team found that reopening or reclosing schools did not have a notable impact on community-level transmission following the initial shutdown and stay-at-home orders. The study found that transmission patterns within schools were similar to those in the wider community, indicating that school closures were not an effective measure in preventing the spread of COVID-19.

The study highlights a critical point that, under certain infection prevention and control measures, children in daycare, preschool, as well as students in elementary and high schools, could safely remain in classrooms without leading to an increase in COVID-19 cases within the broader community. The study emphasizes the high effectiveness of vaccination in preventing transmission within school settings. Additionally, mask usage was identified as one of the most effective interventions. However, it was observed that other measures, such as physical distancing policies, did not have the expected effect, particularly due to difficulties in adherence among children.

In Ontario, school closures lasted longer compared to other provinces. The research team acknowledged the effectiveness of masks, screenings, readily available COVID tests, and cohorting. However, the researchers observed that children mainly participated in online content consumption during this period.

The investigation began in May 2020 and was updated 18 times during the pandemic. The dynamics of transmission in settings such as schools and daycares were affected by changes such as the wider availability of vaccines and the emergence of concerning variants. Consequently, the researchers updated their review continuously to provide policymakers with the latest information.

This study offers valuable insights on how to effectively address future pandemics or outbreaks caused by other infectious diseases. The findings establish a strong and factual foundation for understanding the impact of effective infection control measures, beyond school closures, on public health. This information will help in planning measures more effectively in the future.
