Teacherless School Model In The US Under Scrutiny

An AI-supported private school planned to open in Boston, USA, has brought debates over the role of teachers, the use of technology, and equal opportunity in education back to the agenda. Alpha School plans to open a 25-student private school in the Beacon Hill area in the fall of 2026, serving students from kindergarten through 8th grade. The school’s model is based on students completing mathematics, English, science, and social studies lessons without traditional teacher-led instruction, using AI-supported personalized learning software.

Alpha School argues that students can complete their core academic subjects in only two hours a day, while the remaining time will be devoted to physical education, art, science projects, and hands-on activities. Under the new model, “guides” will be present in classrooms instead of traditional teachers. Their role will not be to teach lessons, but to monitor students’ progress, support their motivation, and accompany them socially and emotionally.

The school’s annual tuition fee of $55,000 has drawn criticism regarding equity and accessibility. Members of the Boston School Committee raised questions about the extent to which this model would serve the average student in Boston. Officials also expressed concerns about the oversight of an AI-based curriculum, the protection of student data, screen time, and academic integrity.

Alpha School, however, argues that its model allows students to learn at their own pace, offers individualized education, and helps children develop self-management skills. Education experts acknowledge that AI-supported systems may offer opportunities for personalized learning in some areas, but they emphasize that the roles of human teachers in inspiring curiosity, fostering a love of learning, and building social connections with students cannot be easily replaced.
