Classroom Writing Replaces Homework In The US

The widespread use of artificial intelligence tools by students in homework assignments has fundamentally changed writing education at the high school and university levels in the United States. Generative AI applications such as ChatGPT have made it more difficult to determine to what extent essays and papers prepared at home are written through students’ own effort.

With the rapid spread of AI-assisted text generation, writing education has begun to move back into the classroom. Greater importance is now being placed not only on the final text produced by students, but also on how they begin writing, develop their ideas, revise their drafts, and defend their own arguments. For this reason, in-class writing activities, supervised pen-and-paper essays, digital writing practices conducted through locked browsers, oral defenses, and portfolio-based assessments are becoming more prominent.

This process shows that artificial intelligence has not completely eliminated student writing, but rather changed the form of writing instruction. Instead of homework assignments completed at home and focused only on the final product, methods that make students’ thinking and production processes visible are gaining greater importance. In this way, writing is turning from merely a submitted text into a learning process that is observed, discussed, and developed in the classroom.
