New Zealand Parents Demand Robotics and AI Education in Schools

Chinese families living in New Zealand are increasingly enrolling their children in extracurricular robotics and artificial intelligence courses. They argue that early exposure to these technologies is crucial for future career success.

Robotics institutions in Auckland, such as CILab and iBot Academy, report a significant increase in enrollment among Asian students, especially since the pandemic. While educators welcome the targeted STEM investments in the 2025 budget, they call for more in-depth and practical technology education within the national curriculum.

Experts note that artificial intelligence is no longer limited to engineering but has expanded into fields like medicine, commerce, and marketing. Associate Professor Ho Seok Ahn from the University of Auckland emphasized the importance of starting technology literacy at an early age. However, he also pointed out challenges such as the need for teacher training, equipment, and resources.

Although STEM education is compulsory from Year 1 to Year 10, many parents want more comprehensive and hands-on content integrated into schools. According to data from Kiwibots, a robotics-focused organization, student interest continues to grow each year, but lack of funding remains a significant issue.
