Call for American Schools to Encourage Summer Job Opportunities
Education experts and policymakers in the United States are urging high schools to support students in gaining workforce skills not just in the classroom but through real-world experience. Their main call: help teenagers find summer jobs.
In an analysis written by Michael J. Petrilli, president of the Fordham Institute, it was emphasized that the most effective way to instill work discipline, confidence, and essential life skills in young people is through actual job experience. According to Petrilli, working in entry-level jobs such as summer camps, fast-food restaurants, smoothie shops, or public swimming pools not only allows students to earn money but also equips them with lasting workplace skills.
Some high schools in the U.S. have already started responding to this call by organizing summer job fairs and partnering with local employment agencies. However, experts emphasize that these efforts should be expanded nationwide.
Experts also argue that working part-time during the summer can positively impact students' academic performance. In fact, discussions are underway about introducing programs that would allow senior-year students to receive academic credit for working in the mornings or afternoons during the school day.
