Revision of Gifted Education Programme in Singapore

Singapore’s Gifted Education Programme (GEP) has been replaced with the High Ability Programme (HAP), aimed at expanding access and addressing elitism concerns. Under this new system, schools will identify their own high-ability students instead of selecting them via centralized exams, allowing them to participate in supplementary classes. However, some parents worry that this process may be unfair and that students might face additional pressure outside regular school hours.

The previous GEP focused on developing skills like research and critical thinking, while the new system seems more academically focused, raising concerns that it might not support neurodivergent children as effectively.

Though the High Ability Programme seeks to offer more opportunities, some parents and teachers argue that the intensive curriculum of GEP, especially for neurodiverse students, had distinct advantages. While the new system aims to improve equity by expanding access to more students, the long-term outcomes remain uncertain.
