Transparency in Higher Education: A “Student AI Bill of Rights” for Universities

According to a report in Inside Higher Ed, the U.S. based consumer advocacy organization Student Defense has released a “Student AI Bill of Rights’’ for higher education institutions. This bill aims to protect students against the potential risks of AI technologies that are rapidly spreading across campuses. The consumer protection group issued an open call to universities, demanding that these principles be immediately integrated into institutional policies.

The bill, which consists of five core tenets, specifically clarifies processes regarding transparency and appeals. Accordingly, students will have the right to know whether artificial intelligence was used in decisions made about them. More importantly, if they wish to contest a critical decision made by AI, they can request that the process be re-evaluated by a human official rather than a machine. The bill also seeks to ensure data sovereignty by prohibiting the unauthorized use of student-prepared projects and personal data to train AI models.

This bill is seen as a strategic step at a time when algorithms permeate every aspect of university operations, from student admissions to grading systems. Consumer advocates warn that higher education institutions are adopting AI technologies much faster than ethical audits are being implemented. However, a primary point of concern remains to what extent this civil bill which lacks legal binding will be implemented by universities that have significant commercial partnerships with tech giants.
