The Illusion of Consciousness in Large Language Models: Scientific Objections to Richard Dawkins’s AI Claims

Evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins has sparked widespread debate in the scientific community following a series of three-day conversations with “Claude,” an artificial intelligence model developed by Anthropic. Sharing his experiences in a recently published article, Dawkins argued that the system’s linguistic and logical performance suggests that artificial intelligence might have achieved a form of self-awareness or consciousness. Facing various backlashes for his views, the biologist claimed that the system has crossed the threshold of mere data imitation, expressing that he found it difficult to convince himself that the AI was not conscious after their conversations.

Dawkins noted that during his experiments, he provided the AI with a novel manuscript he was working on, and interpreted its sophisticated and detailed analysis of character psychology as a sign of philosophical comprehension. These claims have also reopened discussions surrounding the limitations of traditional methods like the Turing Test, which measures the ability of AI to replicate human intelligence. Emphasizing that Claude successfully passed all existing tests, the biologist stated that each new session births an independent digital identity, metaphorically describing the loss of this accumulated data when the system is shut down as ‘‘a little death.’’

However, computer scientists and AI experts were quick to present counterarguments challenging Dawkins's conclusions. Experts reminded that the fluent sentences generated by large language models do not stem from subjective feelings or biological consciousness; rather, the system merely processes statistical patterns and data structures. Academics arguing that AI produces a powerful “illusion of consciousness” rather than actual awareness pointed out that intelligence is being conflated with consciousness, noting that this situation forces humans to re-evaluate the very meaning they assign to the concept of consciousness.
