AI and Demographic Shift: Australia Aims to Offset an Ageing Population with Technology

Australia’s latest Intergenerational Report, released by Treasurer Jim Chalmers, outlines a historic demographic shift confronting the nation, positioning artificial intelligence and automation technologies at the heart of long-term economic solutions. The report projects that, driven by a persistent decline in fertility rates, deaths will outnumber births in Australia by the 2060s for the first time in the country’s history. To manage the shrinking working-age base and the fiscal footprint of an ageing population, the government aims to lift productivity growth, positioning emerging technologies –including AI– as key drivers of that efficiency.

The analysis shows that the burden on the federal budget and healthcare expenditure will mount as the population ages. Pointing out that traditional growth models will no longer suffice as the ratio of working-age Australians to retirees steadily declines, Chalmers stresses that AI-driven productivity gains across healthcare, aged care, logistics, and public services are indispensable. According to Chalmers, enabling AI to absorb routine and administrative processes in labour-constrained sectors will allow limited human resources to be channelled directly into high-value domains and face-to-face care services.

Noting that an AI-led leap in productivity will play a vital role in safeguarding fiscal sustainability and living standards, the report highlights the strategic direction of public investment toward digital infrastructure and AI integration.

Government officials state that, backed by appropriate regulatory reforms, AI adoption offers significant potential to limit the adverse effects of a shrinking share of working Australians on real GDP growth heading into the 2060s and safeguard the nation’s productive capacity.
