UK Schools to Teach Extremist Content and Fake News Awareness

In England, the education secretary, Bridget Phillipson, announced a review of the curriculum in primary and secondary schools to equip children with skills to identify extremist content and misinformation online. The review aims to embed critical thinking across multiple subjects. For example, students might analyze news articles in English, spot fake news websites in computer lessons, and contextualize statistics in math. This initiative is part of broader efforts to protect students from conspiracy theories and misinformation, especially in the wake of recent far-right riots fueled by social media.

The review was prompted by misinformation that contributed to riots following the stabbing of three girls in Southport on July 29, 2024. This highlights the urgency of equipping students with the tools to discern fact from fiction. Phillipson emphasized that while core subjects will maintain high standards, the curriculum will be broadened to include cultural subjects and critical thinking skills to help students thrive in both work and life.

Recent incidents have also brought attention to the role of social media platforms, with the Online Safety Act becoming law last year but not yet fully implemented. There is ongoing debate on whether social media regulations need further strengthening, with figures like Keir Starmer and London’s mayor, Sadiq Khan, suggesting current legislation may be inadequate.

The curriculum changes will focus on creating a knowledge-rich environment that prepares students to navigate a complex digital landscape, ensuring they are better equipped to recognize and challenge harmful content online.
