South Korea Prepares for AI-Powered Digital Textbooks

South Korea is set to introduce the world’s first AI-powered digital textbooks in 2025. Education Minister Lee Ju-ho emphasized that these digital textbooks will transform traditional classrooms by increasing student engagement. He assured full support for teachers as they innovate their teaching methods using digital technology, aiming to make learning more interactive and student-centered.

However, there are significant concerns among parents regarding this digital transition. Many worries about the overexposure of children to digital devices and potential privacy violations. In May, a petition calling for the suspension of the new system was submitted to the National Assembly, garnering support from over 56,000 people. Minister Lee acknowledged these concerns, stating that digital textbooks would be used alongside printed ones and that the transition would consider the needs of both students and teachers.

Starting in 2025, third, fourth, and seventh-grade students will begin using digital textbooks. Fifth, sixth, and eighth grades will follow in 2026, with ninth graders joining in 2027. Both digital and printed textbooks will be used until 2028, ensuring a smoother transition for educators and students alike. This initiative represents a significant step forward in integrating artificial intelligence into South Korea’s education system, aiming to enhance both teaching and learning experiences.
