Boys Begin Their Education at a Disadvantage

New data from the United States show that the educational gap between girls and boys begins much earlier than previously believed. As states have started assessing the academic, social, and behavioral readiness of children entering kindergarten more comprehensively, findings indicate that boys are already behind girls during their first days of school. Experts warn that this initially small gap may persist throughout their education and even widen over time.

According to data collected in Virginia at the beginning of the 2024–2025 academic year, only 48 percent of boys entering kindergarten met overall school-readiness standards, compared with 56 percent of girls. Research shows that girls tend to outperform boys particularly in attention, consistent work habits, willingness to learn, and classroom behavior. The gap that emerges in kindergarten may continue to grow through the fifth grade.

Experts emphasize that the problem is not limited to academic skills. Boys receive more disciplinary penalties than girls from the preschool years onward. Researchers also suggest that the increasingly academic structure of kindergarten classrooms may intensify the adjustment difficulties experienced by boys. As less time is devoted to play, physical activity, and social-emotional learning, young children are expected to meet academic standards at increasingly earlier ages.

Some families who believe their sons are not socially or emotionally ready for school choose to delay kindergarten entry by one year. Although this practice, known as “redshirting,” is particularly common among families of boys, research indicates that its academic benefits are generally short-lived. Rather than applying a single school-entry age to all children, experts recommend offering families more flexible options while clearly explaining the potential advantages and risks of each choice.
