U.S. Schools Struggle with Digital Chaos in the Classroom
A new survey conducted in collaboration between Canada-based edtech company Edsby and Cornerstone Communications, which provides solutions for telecommunications, network infrastructure, and video surveillance, has revealed that the number of educational apps used in schools across the U.S. is rapidly increasing, creating challenges for both teachers and parents.
In the survey, more than 100 teachers, 125 parents, and 50 district and private school curriculum leaders were asked about the digital applications used in their schools, their frequency of use, administrative workload, and more. According to the survey, 54% of schools reported using between 10 and 15 educational apps. However, most of these apps are not integrated with each other. One-third of teachers expressed dissatisfaction with the applications they use. Frequently mentioned issues include time-consuming data entry, loss of information during transitions between apps, and the fragmentation of learning processes. Parents reported feeling lost among the many apps when trying to monitor their children’s progress.
This digital chaos was said to lower the motivation of both teachers and families. Researchers recommended transitioning to more integrated and simplified apps, and emphasized the need for more training and support for teachers to use technology effectively.
