Which Jobs Will Survive in the Age of Artificial Intelligence?
The rapid spread of artificial intelligence in the workplace is confronting young people, particularly those at the beginning of their careers, with the question: “Which occupations will be more secure in the future?” Although no occupation is likely to remain entirely unaffected by technological change, experts suggest that jobs requiring human interaction, empathy, creativity, physical skills, and complex decision-making may prove more resilient to artificial intelligence.
In the healthcare sector, administrative duties such as medical secretarial work, prescription processing, and handling routine patient requests are expected to be more heavily affected by automation. By contrast, professions such as medicine, nursing, and pharmacy, which require direct responsibility for patient safety and treatment decisions, are expected to retain their importance. Experts emphasize that artificial intelligence can organize information and identify risks, but cannot independently determine whether a treatment is safe and appropriate.
Education and childcare are also regarded as areas in which the human element cannot easily be replaced. Experts note that students will continue to need relationships with trusted adults throughout the learning process. Similarly, families are expected to prefer entrusting their children to real people rather than technological systems. Jobs such as teaching, childcare, nursery management, private tutoring, and professional nannying are therefore expected to remain in demand.
Skilled trades such as bricklaying, carpentry, and plastering are also among the fields offering long-term career opportunities. Because these occupations require physical work, adaptation to different environments, and on-site problem-solving, they are considered difficult to automate fully in the short term. Experts point out that vocational and technical education may become increasingly valuable in the age of artificial intelligence. In banking and finance, repetitive roles such as call-centre work, customer service, branch operations, and technical support are expected to undergo greater automation. By contrast, experts predict that demand for data scientists, artificial intelligence engineers, and software developers will increase.
According to experts, the successful workers of the future will not simply be those who try to protect themselves from artificial intelligence, but those who learn to use the technology effectively within their professions. Developing human-centred competencies such as empathy, creativity, communication, ethical judgement, physical skills, and complex problem-solving is becoming increasingly important in career planning.
