The Estonian government has partnered with OpenAI to introduce ChatGPT Edu, the educational version of the AI chatbot, to all secondary school students and teachers. From 2025, the technology will initially be available to students in Year 10 and Year 11.
The government believes this initiative will provide students with personalised guidance while helping teachers with lesson planning and assessment. Education Minister Kristina Kallas stated that Estonia’s competitiveness depends on preparing young people for the AI era. OpenAI’s Vice President for Education, Leah Belsky, noted that millions of students worldwide are already using ChatGPT for learning, but Estonia will be the first country to officially integrate it at a national level.
The success of this initiative will depend on teacher training and the balanced implementation of ethical AI use. Estonia has long been recognised as a leader in digital transformation and ranks among the top countries in terms of ChatGPT accounts per capita.
