Pupil Behaviour Worsens as More Teachers Face Bullying, Survey Finds
A new government report has revealed that one in five teachers and school leaders believe pupil behaviour has deteriorated, with a growing number of school staff reporting instances of bullying, harassment, and discrimination. The survey, conducted with over 10,000 workers, showed a decline in the proportion of respondents rating pupil behaviour as good, dropping from 62% in 2022 to 53% in 2023.
Additionally, 22% of participants who took part in both the 2022 and 2023 surveys expressed a more negative view of pupil behaviour the second time around. Bullying, harassment, and discrimination incidents have also risen, with 20% of respondents reporting they had experienced at least one of these in the past year, compared to 16% the previous year.
The report also highlighted an increase in flexible working among teachers and leaders, rising from 40% in 2022 to 46% in 2023. However, views on the compatibility and acceptance of flexible working have become more negative. Despite efforts to reduce workload, full-time leaders’ average working week increased to 58.2 hours, and full-time teachers’ hours rose to 52.4 per week.
