Vietnam takes step to embed Global Citizenship in education

A new step is being taken in Vietnam’s education reform. Global Citizenship Education (GCED) will no longer be confined to textbooks but will be integrated across the entire education system, from school culture to community engagement. The consultation workshop was organised by the Vietnam National Institute of Educational Sciences, the Ministry of Education and Training and the UNESCO Office in Vietnam, bringing together more than 250 teachers, school leaders, education officials and international experts. During the meeting, participants stressed that GCED should not be limited to classroom content but should also be embedded in policy, teaching methods, school culture and links with society. They discussed practices that could help students better understand both global and local issues, including climate change, cultural diversity, gender equality and digital transformation. Strategies to nurture responsibility, empathy and a spirit of cooperation among students were also highlighted. This national consultation is seen as a milestone in Vietnam’s ongoing education reform. The feedback gathered from the workshop is expected to guide the next stage of the National Action Plan, which aims to expand Global Citizenship Education in line with Sustainable Development Goal 4.7.
