Scotland’s Schools Face Challenges with Increased Special Exam Needs

Schools in Scotland are struggling to organize exams due to an increase in the number of students needing special arrangements in the wake of the pandemic. There has been a 40% increase in the number of students requesting measures such as separate rooms, breaks, and extra time during exams.
The number of invigilators increased by 20% compared to the year before the pandemic, while costs rose by 52%. 94% of teachers reported that students were less resilient and 76% found exams more stressful than before the pandemic. The number of students with special support needs rose from 36,544 in 2007 to 259,036 last year.
The number of students needing special arrangements for exams increased from 20,160 in 2019 to 28,345 last year. In the same period, the number of students needing separate rooms for exams increased from 13,283 to 19,710, and the number of students needing extra time increased from 15,895 to 22,089.
The difficulties with exam arrangements in Scotland and the increasing need for special arrangements demonstrate the need to reform the education system.
