An Alternative to Traditional Education: Personalized Learning with the “School Within a School” Model
Professor Yong Zhao from the University of Kansas has proposed a new education model, arguing that the traditional system no longer meets students' needs. Zhao advocates for an approach that gives students more control while integrating artificial intelligence technologies to enhance both success and happiness.
Zhao’s suggested “school-within-a-school” model involves dividing a large school into smaller units, each offering a curriculum tailored to students' abilities and needs. Artificial intelligence plays a crucial role by providing personalized learning content and instant feedback to students.
Zhao criticized the traditional system for forcing students to conform to standardized norms, ignoring individual potential. Schools in the U.S., China, and Australia experimenting with this model have reported positive results, with students discovering their unique talents.
Several schools in Kansas have been selected for pilot implementation. Zhao emphasized that change in education is challenging but believes such innovative models hold the potential to provide students with a brighter future.
