Over 52 Million Children in Conflict Zones Lack Access to Education

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) declared 2024 one of the worst years for children worldwide. According to the report, approximately 473 million children live in conflict zones globally. Among them, 47.2 million are displaced, and over 52 million lack access to education. In regions like Palestine, Sudan, Gaza, Syria, and Ukraine, the destruction of schools and educational infrastructure has worsened the situation.

UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell stated, “2024 has been one of the darkest years in UNICEF’s history. Children are not just victims of conflicts; they bear the heaviest losses.” Besides the lack of education, malnutrition, forced displacement, and limited access to healthcare are significant challenges.

UNICEF has called on the international community and governments to take immediate action to meet the educational, shelter, and healthcare needs of children in conflict zones. Russell emphasized that children should not be seen as collateral damage of wars, warning against the normalization of such tragedies. Greater international cooperation is needed to reduce conflicts and rebuild educational infrastructure.
