Digital Habits Negatively Impact Motor and Language Development
A new study conducted in Berlin reveals that digital media usage negatively affects the motor and language development of children and adolescents. According to data analyzed between 2013 and 2023, the percentage of young people in Germany showing motor impairment symptoms increased to 3%, while the rate of language development disorders rose to 8.6%.
The study showed that young people’s consumption of short-format content on social media diminishes their ability to pay attention to detail and develop a broad perspective, adversely impacting language skills.
A survey by KKH Kaufmännische Krankenkasse, conducted by the Forsa Research Institute, indicated that about one in five young people use digital services to escape problems or due to the fear of missing out. According to survey data, 93% of German youth aged 12-19 spend time on social media daily, with 85% using platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and Snapchat multiple times a day.
Of the participants, 79% primarily view content shared by others without commenting or engaging, while 38% respond to at least one post each day, and only 15% share their own content daily.
The study also indicated that technology’s role as an integral part of young people’s daily lives is contributing to increased incidents of online bullying on social media.
