Recess Supports Students’ Academic Success and Social Development

In the United States, recess practices that have been reduced or completely removed in some schools in an effort to increase academic achievement and extend classroom time are once again being debated. Education experts and child development advocates emphasize that recess is not merely a break, but an important part of the school day that supports students’ learning, attention, social development, and school engagement.

Recess advocates state that children should have regular and structured playtime every day. Some civil initiatives in the United States are calling for students to be given 60 minutes of playtime per day and argue that recess should not be used as a reward or punishment depending on good or bad behavior.

Experts say recess helps students develop teamwork, cooperation, friendship-building skills, and a sense of community. It is also noted that playtime can increase attention in the classroom, reduce behavioral problems, and help combat chronic absenteeism. However, experts also emphasize that simply increasing recess time is not enough; high-quality and well-planned play environments must also be created. Simple play materials, designated play areas, and screen-free time can help children interact in healthier ways.

According to educators, when implemented properly, recess can become an essential school experience that strengthens students’ academic as well as social development.
