AI Use in Exams Begins in Denmark

The Danish Ministry of Education has announced that starting next year, students in some high schools will be allowed to use artificial intelligence to prepare for the oral component of their English exams. The ministry stated that the policy, which will begin in 2026, will be experimental and apply only to the oral part of the English exam required for the high school diploma. Under the new arrangement, once students receive their exam topic, they will have one hour of preparation time, during which they may use “all available tools, including generative AI.” Afterwards, students will be required to deliver their oral presentation in person before an examiner.

Education Minister Mattias Tesfaye said, “We are launching pilot schemes to try to find the right balance,” stressing the importance of promoting digital learning while safeguarding teaching standards. On the other hand, for the written portion of the exam, students will be required to complete part of it by hand in order to avoid full dependence on computers. The ministry emphasized that this measure both limits the risk of cheating and helps students develop their own language style.Denmark has allowed students to use the internet during exams since 2008. However, the AI scheme will apply only to schools that voluntarily choose to participate.
