Japan Seeks Solutions for Student Sleep Deprivation

A study conducted in collaboration between the University of Tokyo and the Riken National Research and Development Institute has examined the sleep patterns of approximately 50,000 elementary, middle, and high school students since September 2022. The study revealed that more than half of the children did not meet the sleep durations recommended by the Ministry of Health.

The research identified that children’s increasing after-school activities, unprecedented number of hours spent at cram schools, and late-night smartphone usage have led to a lack of sleep. Yoichi Minami, one of the study’s leaders, stated, “we hope not only the children but also their parents will realize how serious the issue is.”

Following the findings on sleep deprivation, schools across Japan have taken a new step to improve students’ sleep health. As part of this initiative, Kita Middle School in Ogaki has started an afternoon nap program, where students get the opportunity to sleep for 10 minutes after lunch every day. This practice aims to help students be more focused and rested for their afternoon classes.
