Community Schools Lift Learning and Wellbeing in the US

A comprehensive study conducted in the state of California has revealed that investments in the Community Schools model have significantly improved student achievement and wellbeing. The research, carried out by the Learning Policy Institute (LPI), analysed one year of student data from the first schools to receive funding through the California Community Schools Partnership Programme (CCSPP). According to the findings, chronic absenteeism in Community Schools fell by 30 per cent, while suspensions decreased by 15 per cent. Academic performance improved notably, particularly among disadvantaged students. Black students and English learners gained the equivalent of 43 additional learning days in mathematics and 36 in English language arts. Dr Fabi Bagula, Superintendent of the San Diego Unified School District (SDUSD), highlighted that Community Schools support not only academic achievement but also students’ social and emotional wellbeing. “Community Schools provide a strong support system against out-of-classroom challenges such as poverty, food insecurity and migration processes. The research proves that this model makes a difference even for the most vulnerable students,” Bagula said. The Community Schools model transforms schools from being merely educational spaces into collaborative hubs built on shared governance between families, community organisations and educators. By providing academic support, health and wellbeing services, community engagement and a strong school climate, the model plays a critical role in supporting students throughout their learning journey.
