Denver Public Schools in the U.S. Block Access to ChatGPT
In the United States, Denver Public Schools (DPS) announced that starting this week, it has decided to block students’ access to ChatGPT on school-issued devices and through the district’s Wi-Fi network. The decision was reported to have been taken due to security concerns related to new features recently added to the artificial intelligence–based chatbot.
DPS officials pointed out that the new features—particularly the ability for users to create 20-person group chats—could increase the risk of cyberbullying and academic misconduct. In an informational email sent to families on Friday, it was stated that such group chats could lead to harmful interactions among students. It was also emphasized that the planned addition of adult-oriented content to ChatGPT raises serious concerns regarding student safety.
The email noted that such content could “potentially facilitate the creation or spread of content related to self-harm, violence, and bullying.” DPS Chief Information Officer Richard Charles stated that ensuring students engage only with age-appropriate information and digital systems is among the district’s core responsibilities.
