Canada Lost 86% Indian Students In 2023

Canadian Immigration Minister Marc Miller has announced that one of the effects of the diplomatic tensions caused by India’s expulsion of Canadian diplomats has been a significant drop in the number of study permits issued to Indian students. According to official data, this previously unrecorded situation led to an 86 percent drop in the number of study permits issued to Indian students in the fourth quarter of last year, compared with the previous quarter. The figure fell from 108,940 to 14,910. In recent years, Indian students have become the largest group of international students in Canada. In 2022, more than 41 per cent of all permits, or 225,835 to be exact, were issued to Indian students. Alternatives for Indian students include countries such as the United States, the United Arab Emirates, Australia and Saudi Arabia, which offer different education and opportunities.

In an interview with a prominent media outlet, Marc Miller suggested the potential implementation of a cap on the influx of international students to address the increasing demand for housing. Canada’s allure as a destination for international students is enhanced by its relatively accessible work permits post-graduation.
