Greece’s Education Ministry has announced a major reform to increase the percentage of students admitted through placement exams from 12% to 30%, starting in the 2025-26 academic year. Education Minister Kyriakos Pierrakakis described the reform as a way to provide students with greater academic mobility and career opportunities.
The policy is expected to benefit regional universities struggling with unfilled seats due to strict admission criteria. Students will have the flexibility to apply for second degrees or pursue interdisciplinary studies, with exemptions granted for previously completed coursework.
The reform also targets administrative improvements, such as expediting faculty recruitment and reducing bureaucratic delays. Experts believe these changes will enhance flexibility, support student mobility, and modernize Greece’s higher education system in line with European standards, making it more competitive and accessible.
