Malaysia Introduces the “Two Teachers, One Classroom” Model

Malaysia’s Ministry of Education’s plan to implement a “co-teaching” system in public schools starting in 2027 has sparked nationwide debate. Under the new model, two teachers will conduct lessons together in one classroom. According to the ministry, this method aims to make classes more engaging, interactive, and student-centered, while ensuring that each student receives sufficient individual attention.

The initiative was developed following a recent rise in school violence incidents, with the goal of strengthening classroom management and supporting students’ character development. The project will also coincide with the reintroduction of “Alam dan Manusia” (Nature and Humanity) — a subject first introduced in 1982 and later discontinued in 1994. The ministry stated that the new version of the subject seeks to foster creativity, scientific thinking, and social awareness among students.

However, some parents and educators are questioning the plan’s feasibility, citing teacher shortages and the challenges of preparation. Parents have voiced concerns that there are still not enough qualified teachers in the country, with some classes reportedly being left without instructors. On the other hand, the National Union of the Teaching Profession welcomed the initiative. Its Secretary-General, Fouzi Singon, said that current teachers could adapt to the new system by combining different subject areas, thereby providing more individualized support for students.
