A controversial classroom activity in China’s Henan province has triggered nationwide criticism after footage from the event went viral on social media. The video shows parents kneeling to form a “human bridge” while blindfolded students walked over their backs. The school described the event as part of a “guilt education” exercise designed to teach pupils gratitude and a sense of responsibility towards their parents.
While some parents and social media users defended the activity, arguing that it would help children “better appreciate their parents’ sacrifices and focus more on their studies,” many others condemned it as inappropriate and psychologically harmful. Critics said the method could damage family relationships and instil unhealthy feelings of guilt in children.
Following the backlash, the school issued a public apology on 7 October. Administrators stated that the event had been organised by two classes with parental consent but admitted that it had been “misguided in practice.” The school also pledged to develop new teaching approaches prioritising students’ mental wellbeing.
