Parents Have a Powerful Role in Improving Literacy Education

In California, there's a growing recognition of parents' vital role in improving literacy education. The recent launch of the “Read LA! Literacy and Justice for All” campaign by Families in Schools aims to fully implement the “science of reading” in the Los Angeles Unified School District. This approach is based on evidence-based research showing how children learn to read effectively. However, many parents are unaware of their child’s literacy progress or the school curriculum, and some are unfamiliar with the science of reading.

Parental involvement is crucial from an early age, as interacting with infants and engaging in nurturing talk helps develop the neural patterns necessary for language comprehension. While some parents actively participate in their children's literacy development, others face challenges due to economic, time constraints, or language barriers.

The campaign emphasizes that, besides supporting children at home, parents must advocate for their children's literacy in schools, especially when they are struggling. By uniting and demanding policy and practice changes aligned with the science of reading, parents can contribute significantly to resolving the literacy crisis in California.
