Threats to Data Centers Could Slow Down New AI Investments

The military tension starting between the U.S. and Israel, and Iran has made tech companies’ massive AI data center investments in the Middle East direct targets. Along with the escalation of the conflicts, Iran's strikes hitting three Amazon Web Services (AWS) data centers in the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain have raised serious questions about the future of digital investments in the region.

In recent years, the Middle East has become a major global draw for AI companies thanks to cheap and easily accessible energy and land resources. Microsoft's $15 billion investment plan in the UAE and the “Stargate” campus project involving companies like OpenAI, Nvidia, and Oracle were the biggest examples of this strategic shift.

However, recent developments have completely changed the perception of security. Experts point out that data centers are now beginning to be seen as legitimate targets in modern warfare. Analysts state that relocating already operational massive facilities is difficult due to contracts and technical requirements. But it is warned that if risks increase, companies might pivot to safer and more predictable regions like Northern Europe or Southeast Asia to build new capacity.

According to experts, the Middle East remains attractive for tech companies with the advantages it provides, and relocating existing data centers seems unlikely. However, it is emphasized that the prospect of a prolonged conflict could push companies to slow down new investments, pause planned partnerships, or look for alternative regional hubs.
