Bill Gates Warns: We’re Not Ready for the AI Era

Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates issued a warning about the transition to an AI-driven era in a new assessment, calling on governments and world leaders to take action. Gates said societies and governments are not sufficiently prepared for this technological shift, and warned that if the transition isn’t managed well, AI could lead to negative outcomes. In his view, AI could become either the greatest equalizing force in history or the worst source of injustice; which direction it takes depends on the steps taken now.

Gates listed job losses alongside cyber and biological security threats as key risks posed by AI, saying concerns over human relationships and AI’s controllability have become urgent as well. He predicted that without intervention in fields like law, medicine, software and manufacturing, there will be far fewer jobs than today. He argued this shift can’t be compared to past technological revolutions, since AI itself can take over human cognitive functions rather than simply displacing labor the way earlier transitions did.

As a solution, Gates proposes new national institutions to coordinate AI policy across areas from national security to education, taxation and health, alongside an international body with elements resembling nuclear inspections. He also backs reserving some jobs for humans and taxing AI and robot usage. While acknowledging that global coordination is difficult given the geopolitical climate, he said AI companies themselves are far more concerned than their public statements suggest.
